Are there existing tools or practices for converting OpenFOAM run-time post-processing directory, postProcessing, into a single HDF5 file or HDF5 groups?

The typical structure of postProcessing directory is as follows:

postProcessing
├── contours
│   ├── 15.75
│   │   └── isoField.vtp
│   ├── 15.76
│   │   └── isoField.vtp
...
├── slices
│   ├── 15.75
│   │   └── field1.vtp
│   │   └── field2.vtp
│   ├── 15.76
│   │   └── field1.vtp
│   │   └── field2.vtp
...
├── scalars
│   ├── 0
│   │   └── scalar1.dat

The numbered directory sometimes has a meaning of the output time step, but sometimes has a meaning of a checkpoint/restart time and contains a time series (e.g. for a scalar).

I can manually HDFify the above structure, but I was wondering if there are already tools or good practices to accompolish this.

Motivation

I am considering HDF5 as a tool to organise some of the large data sets we have generated. Some of the important features for me is compression, parallel post-processing, metadata and provenance tracking.
