I think that the Metcalfe book is a good annotated guide to the modern features of Fortran, very useful if you already know an earlier version of the language but not a good introduction to … , has not been updated for Fortran 2003 or later. I have a strong aversion to the Chapman book. I can't remember why I disliked the 90/95 edition so much so can't justify this aversion any longer …
