Thank you both for your comments. I have edited the question above to give a specific example. Quad precision does seem to give an acceptable result, but double precision is disappointing.

If it helps we can assume $a,b$ are in $[1,2]$. The computation comes from computing an integral $\int_b^a x^{n-1} dx$
