On Stack Exchange, we believe the core moderators should come from the community, and be elected by the community itself through popular vote. We hold regular elections to determine who these community moderators will be.

Community moderators are accorded the highest level of privilege on our community, and should themselves be exemplars of positive behavior and leaders within the community.

Our general criteria for moderators is as follows:

  • patient and fair
  • leads by example
  • shows respect for their fellow community members in their actions and words
  • open to some light but firm moderation to keep the community on track and resolve (hopefully) uncommon disputes and exceptions

Full elections have three phases and an optional fourth phase (Primary):

  1. Question Collection
  2. Nomination
  3. Primary
  4. Election

Please participate in the moderator elections by voting, and perhaps even by nominating yourself to be a community moderator!

I really value this Community, so I'm putting myself forward as a candidate.

I have the time to actively contribute here on a daily basis, a reasonable amount of domain knowledge, and a track record for participation in community moderation at Math.SE for folks to judge my qualities of fairness and patience.

Questionnaire
  1. How would you deal with a user who produced a steady stream of valuable answers, but tends to generate a large number of arguments/flags from comments?

All users deserve to have their contributions viewed in the best possible light. Those who produce "a steady stream" of good answers are usually invested in helping, so my expectation would be that giving private feedback would result in reducing friction generated by hasty (possibly inconsiderate) comments.

  1. How would you handle a situation where another mod closed/deleted/etc. a question that you feel shouldn’t have been?

I place a lot of value on collegiality at all levels of interaction. That said, if I were to irk another mod by taking an action they disagreed with, I'd want them to discuss it so we could reach consensus. Naturally I'd also take that approach if the roles were reversed.

  1. In your opinion, what do moderators do?

While moderators act as exception handlers for some posts that fall through the cracks of community moderation, they also take the initiative in communicating on meta about site policy and changes.

  1. A diamond will be attached to everything you say and have said in the past, including questions, answers and comments. Everything you will do will be seen under a different light. How do you feel about that?

I am prepared to be scrutinized for words and deeds! And to respond kindly to any criticisms that result.

  1. In what way do you feel that being a moderator will make you more effective as opposed to simply reaching 10k or 20k rep?

I've never been a StackExchange moderator, so my thoughts are more about how much I have to learn than how effective I will be. Of the responsibilities beyond voting as part of community moderation, I'd expect that interpersonal skills (communicating and building relationships) are key to effective moderation.

This is one of the communities that I've envisioned to become a fruitful expert-community, ever since I saw it in beta. Computational science is, in a sense, my professional field. I am therefore open to lend a hand in maintaining a high-quality community.

Questionnaire
  1. How would you deal with a user who produced a steady stream of valuable answers, but tends to generate a large number of arguments/flags from comments?

[Let him know that his/her answers are possibly missing information.]

  1. How would you handle a situation where another mod closed/deleted/etc. a question that you feel shouldn’t have been?

[I would contact the other mod, and discuss. If we couldn't agree, I'd suggest tossing a coin.]

  1. In your opinion, what do moderators do?

[They promote good behavior and monitor that the community remains as intended.]

  1. A diamond will be attached to everything you say and have said in the past, including questions, answers and comments. Everything you will do will be seen under a different light. How do you feel about that?

[What is said relative to such diamond gives a strong signal about the community, since the diamond users are "official representatives" of a community. Therefore, their behavior must serve as an example. If they behave badly, then this should degrade the morale in participating in the community.]

  1. In what way do you feel that being a moderator will make you more effective as opposed to simply reaching 10k or 20k rep?

[It will not make me more effective, but I was just interested in offering a helping hand.]

This election is over.
